How To Remove Your Chevy Silverado Truck Tailgate In Under 5 Minutes!

The thought of removing your Silverado's tailgate can be overwhelming. Visions of mechanics, quotes, appointments, and leaving your truck at the shop for hours might dance in your head. But don't worry! In most cases, you don't need an expert or appointment. With a little help from this guide and an extra set of hands, you can tackle this project yourself in under 5 minutes. This guide will walk you through the process step-by-step, making it easy for anyone to remove their tailgate.

This is a step-by-step DIY guide to removing the tailgate assembly on your Chevy Silverado Truck (2007-2013, Non Locking Mechanism or Camera)

1- Open the Tailgate:  Fully extend the tailgate until it's horizontal to the ground.

2- Disconnect the Support Straps/Cables:  On both sides of the tailgate bed, you'll find straps/cables that prevent your tailgate from opening too far. Slightly raise the tailgate to create slack in the straps, making removal easier.

Locate the attachment point for each strap and with your other hand detach them by pulling the tab away, pull up, and away as pictured above.

3- Unhinge the Tailgate:  Now comes the fun part! Grab a friend (remember, an extra set of hands is recommended) and lift the tailgate to a 45-degree angle. This angle allows the tailgate to come free from the truck bed hinges.

4- Remove from the Right Hinge FIRST:  You MUST start with the right-hand side hinge! While maintaining the 45-degree angle, firmly pull the tailgate off the passenger side (right hinge). You might encounter some resistance, especially if rust is present. Don't be afraid to apply extra force, but be careful not to damage the tailgate or truck bed.

Pro Tip: Applying a little bit of lubrication directly on the hinges such as WD-40, will save you a lot of frustration.

5- Remove from the Left Hinge:  Pull the tailgate towards the passenger side to completely free the tailgate from the bedside hinge.
